Synopsis
Maurice and Katia Krafft dedicated their lives to exploring the world’s volcanoes
Their legacy consists of groundbreaking shots of explosions and their effects, composed in this visually stunning collage. It’s easy to see why Werner Herzog was interested in Katya and Maurice Kraft’s story, because they had jobs that involved some unusual natural phenomena, they had a determination that put them in great danger, and they were different kinds of filmmakers.
We learn the fate of the main characters right away, and in both films, these characters are spared a lot of scenes that tell us more or less who they are
. Most of Herzog’s films (both his feature films and documentaries) feature unusual or unconventional characters chasing something in the great outdoors, and in my opinion, The Fire Winding feels like a spiritual sequel to Grizzly Man in some ways.
The main difference is that in Grizzly Man, grizzly bears were a dangerous threat in the wild, and in this documentary, it’s volcanoes
I feel that Herzog could lack mystery or psychological immersion, which is probably the main reason why it doesn’t grab me as much as Grizzly Man or Herzog’s best documentaries. Maybe Katia and Maurice Krafft are less thought of, or maybe Herzog prefers to let the material speak for itself (Grizzly Man, The Fire Within interviews with other people are lacking).
But considering the amazing material and interesting presentation/editing, The Fire Within is still good
It didn’t help that the much better movie Fire of Love came out the same year because it focused on the same characters and, if I remember correctly, had more excitement. Still, I think The Fire Within does enough to make it worth watching, along with another 2022 documentary about Katia and Maurice Krafft.
