Synopsis
It follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham, who have a long-running rivalry that comes to a head. The same filming location was also used to portray Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC TV adaptation of Poldark.
This adaptation (one ep in) seems to be coming along nicely
So obvs he read the book an eons ago (it was like a coming of age ritual in a certain time and place) and TBH he remembered very little apart from the odd names (because some of Jilly’s creations were so rigorous – Rupert Campbell Black says it all – and they’ve sort of passed into the lexicon), but almost immediately I started to, if not remember the wholesale plot, get a synaptic flash with the heady scent of YSL Opium from watching The Rivals. You giggle rather than laugh out loud and it’s spicy, not salacious.

He’s built the world quickly – the 80s, old men and Thatcherite yuppies, bored wives and fearsome warrior women, all treated like meat no matter what they do, concord, cigars and birdsong, the strata of the English class, Britain in a globalising world. and the socio-political commentary, while not shoved in your face, is much clearer than when reading the books.
Okay, it’s a bit of a panty, panto panty, but FFS why not?!
It may be because I’m older and have met more people that Cooper’s critique of British culture is more obvious, but I think it’s also the casting, the accents, the costumes – the highlighting of each character’s habitus (to quote Bordeau) and presenting it to the audience for consideration, admiration, denigration and/or titillation.
