It’s frustrating to watch a film that seems to be on a certain trajectory but keeps stumbling along the way. That’s exactly what happens in this period, the coming-of-age story set in 1938 Italy.
sweet time (and many long detours) along a seemingly predictable path
Writer-director Laura Lucchetti’s adaptation of Cesare Pavese’s 1949 novel about a striking 17-year-old seamstress (Yile Yara Vianello) who becomes romantically involved with an artist’s model (Deva Cassel). But even as this offering seemingly approaches that goal, it takes another unexpected left turn, then leads to what the filmmaker himself admits is a deliberately ambiguous conclusion.
As a result, whatever lofty intentions may have been behind the production’s beginnings are ultimately obscured in the final cut
Consequently, this is the kind of film that will likely leave many viewers scratching their heads and asking, “What’s the point of all this?” The picture is supposedly tackling a subject that was taboo when the story was conceived and the book was written, but that goal isn’t achieved nearly as clearly as it could have been. There are also passing references to the fascist sociopolitical conditions of the time (elements not present in the source material), but they’re never really fleshed out, so their inclusion feels like a discarded afterthought.
Luchetti’s third outing needs a major overhaul to make it work, because it doesn’t work as it is
Frankly, "Beautiful Summer" There’s some great cinematography, well-chosen location shots that showcase the beauty of Turin, and a catchy soundtrack, but if those are the best things about the film, it doesn’t say much about the picture as a whole.
